Thank you for your interest in the Contra Costa County Sheriff’s Search and Rescue Team (CoCoSAR)!
Being a member of CoCoSAR is a privilege that comes with great rewards, but also much responsibility. The decision to apply to be a part of the team should not be taken lightly as the work can be physically, mentally and emotionally challenging.
CoCoSAR operates under the auspices of the Office of the Sheriff of Contra Costa County, and as such, team members must act in a fashion that reflects well on that office.
You don’t need any special skills or experience to join the team. We are looking for people with the right attitude and a genuine desire to help others without thought of personal reward or recognition. The good news is that we provide extensive training in everything you need to become a qualified searcher and first responder. Our team members come from many different backgrounds and professions, and many find ways to leverage their skills as SAR team members.
The Application Process
Our application process includes:
- Attend one of our orientations and pick up an application
- If possible, fill out an Interest Form (online or printed) and submit it before the orientation
- Submit your application
- Complete an oral interview (Oral Boards)
- Complete a background check and fingerprinting
The SAR Academy for entry-level SAR members (Type 3) is held only once a year, in September. Those who wish to continue to the next level, which is optional (but recommended), may also attend the Type 2 Academy for two weeks in October. Both academies encompass four-hour classes on Tuesday and Thursday nights as well as many full weekend days. All of the entry-level academy classes and exercises must be completed in order for a student to become a full-fledged team member. Anyone who wishes to apply should first consider whether the timing is right for a busy fall schedule of training.

Because of the unique nature of this work, you must attend a 90-minute new-member orientation program to receive an application form to join the team.
Orientations are held February through June on the first Thursday of the month at the Office of Emergency Services, 50 Glacier Drive in Martinez.
NOTE: To accommodate more applicants, we’ve added one more 2017 orientation session on Thursday, June 29th at 7:00 pm.
CoCoSAR applications are only given out at the new-member orientations. You may attend without advance notification, but it helps us if you submit an interest form in advance to us to let us know you’d like to attend.
