As a member of Explorer Post 611 you will:
Serve the citizens of Contra Costa County as a skilled search and rescue volunteer. Provide medical, evidence and educational support as needed at the request of the Sheriff. Prepare
for a career in emergency services through extensive hands-on training that meets or exceeds the search and rescue requirements of the California Emergency Management Agency.
Respond to incidents, such as:
- Lost children, hikers, etc.
- Alzheimers/dementia walk-aways
- Wilderness/mountain searches
- Natural and man-made disasters
- Criminal case evidence searches
- Low and high angle rope rescues
- Public event medical support
- Night, foul weather and rough terrain searches.
Explorer Post 611 offers training opportunities in:
- CPR and First Aid
- Ground Search techniques
- Wilderness Travel and Survival
- Technical Rope Rescue
- Human Tracking and Metal Detection
- Swift Water Rescue
- Canine and Equestrian search
- Mountain bikes
- Incident search management
As well as introduction to ATV, helicopter and aircraft search techniques.
Explorer Post 611 operates through a charter with the Exploring Division of the BSA Learning for Life Career Education Program, which acts as a gateway to a number of professions including:
- Emergency Medical Services (EMS),
- Fire and other emergency services,
- in FEMA, Homeland Security and the military.
To qualify:
- Must be at least a high school freshman, between 14 and 18 years of age, and a U.S. citizen.
- Have no felony arrests or convictions.
- Must be physically fit.
- Maintain at least a “C” (2.0) grade-point-average.
- Have a good driving record (if licensed to drive).
To join:

- Meet all minimum requirements.
- Complete an Explorer application.
- Pass a minimum qualification appraisal interview.
- Successfully complete a background evaluation.
