Mt. Diablo Plane Crash
On January 19, 1999, a small plane crashed on Mt. Diablo during poor weather.
The Civil Air Patrol used the signal from the plane's emergency locator
transmitter (ELT) to determine roughly where the plane went down. Searchers
from Contra Costa Sheriff's Search and Rescue Team located the plane and the
deceased pilot. Team members secured the crash site until the coroner
arrived, and removed the remains once the coroner's on-scene investigation was
complete.
Inclimate weather severely restricted the use of helicopters, and the steep
terrain make for a wet muddy hike to the crash site.
